Venice 79BEYOND THE WALL (Shab, Dakheli, Divar) ('126) by Vahid Jalilvand with Navid Mohammadzadeh First Scene: Ali attempts suicide, very violent, suffocating. The dilapidated building in which he finds himself prevents his completion and for a few minutes the breathless man under water tries to breathe between gasps. He is blind, he only sees shadows but hears noises. A woman wanted by the police is hiding in her apartment. Leila, under stress, has constant attacks of epilepsy and discovered by the man, she reveals to him the anguish of having lost her sick son during a workers' rebellion conducted in chaos. Her only fault is that of having demonstrated, of being charged by the police and of having fled following an accident while begging to be left to go and look for her son. The building is surrounded by the police but Alì wants to protect her. A series of characters, investigators , doctors induce Alì into reticence while continuous flashbacks allow us to glimpse the unraveling of a narrative and emotional labyrinth that the screenplay manages to skilfully unravel. “A concentration camp metaphor that could not be more representative of today's Iran” says the director of Venezia 79 Alberto Barbera, defines Beyond the wall. The director already known at the Lido festival, returns with a claustrophobic and adrenaline-filled film, where the discomfort remains constant for all 126 minutes of extreme tension. An extreme blow to the Iranian condition, through a directorial jewel and indisputable interpretation. The interpretation of Navid Mohammadzadeh, already awarded in the Orizzonti section together with the direction of Vahi Jalilvad in 2017, confirms the absolute interpretative talent of the actor who deserves this year, the Volpi cup. plot

Ali, a blind man, is attempting to commit suicide when he is interrupted by the concierge of his building. He is informed that the police is in search of a woman who has escaped and hidden somewhere in the building. Little by little, Ali finds out that the fugitive woman, Leila, is inside his apartment. After participating in a workers’ protest that led to chaos, she is distraught about her four-year-old son who was lost when she was taken in a police van. Gradually, Ali becomes emotionally attached to her. Wishing to flee reality, helping Leila becomes a refuge in his own world of imagination.
