At just 30 years old, Kantemir Balagov, a student of Sokurov's school, already has a cinematographic diptych that bears his name ('Tesnota' and 'The Autumn Girl') that is the envy of entire larger filmographies. A pair of films that dialogue in some way with History, far from the objective reality of the news, but rather filtered according to the partial and fragmentary point of view of very subjective common eyes. The same cinematic approach which, albeit with completely different objectives and outcomes, is is recently found in other dazzling debut duos: Laszlo Nemes ('The Son of Saul' and 'Sunset') and Brady Corbet ('The Chief's Childhood' and 'Vox Lux'). In this case we are in 1945 Leningrad, in a historical moment in which, despite the war having already ended, one can still clearly perceive the physical and psychological traces that the world conflict has brought with it, upsetting and tormenting human bodies reduced to simple cannon fodder. And of body (and physicality) speaks precisely of 'The Autumn Girl', which, without ever losing sensitivity and humanity, moves its ranks among the narrow corridors of a hospital for war veterans, in a place where survival is often nothing more than a condemnation. Paralyzed, amputated, bandaged or simply in plaster. Everyone suffers for being saved. Everyone perhaps feels the premonition of the end of a collective war, but equally suffers from the absence of a similar end to personal suffering. Even Iya, the protagonist, despite being a nurse, would have all the characteristics of being on the other leaves, with a stress trauma that temporarily freezes her body and breathing in a state of extreme immobility ("she becomes enchanted" - they say).
