reviews

Antiviral of  Roberto Flauto Roberto Flauto
Antiviral, despite being imperfect and lacking, is a great film. I saw it last night, for the first time. I liked it a lot. I really loved Possessor, a more mature and aware work, so I had high expectations, which were not betrayed, although the stylistic code of Cronenberg jr.'s second film. it is only touched upon here. And rightly so. It means that in the eight years that passed between the two films, there was study, maturation, work, application. The typically Cronenbergian themes of the contamination of the body with the machine, of the intertwining of flesh and metal, blood and bits, which I adore always, in the vision of Cronenberg the son they have been declined on the terrain of identity narration, in an even more profound way than his father did. In Antiviral there are precious traces of a well-defined poetics, a clear, precise vision, regardless from certain imperfections, which in Possessor reaches enormous heights. I found the idea of inoculating the virus as a means of creating a "connection" with the celebrity, the other, truly original and effective. As well as the idea of meat consumption, in a sort of perverse version of "take it all and eat it all", which connects the "hunger" for notoriety, for glory, with certain mechanisms of social living. And again: giving a face to the virus, inevitably deformed, scary, unstable: another great idea. In short, the film, in my opinion, works on many levels, also because it does not fall into rhetorical discourse. Infect yourself to resemble, to share, to get closer; illness as a tool for getting closer to the ideal self, which is that of another, of the famous person, of the VIP, of which every aspect is cannibalized, including the impalpable. In that stunning white, crossed and stained by the red of blood that at times covers the entire frame. But also the red of Syd's hair or the blue of Hanna's eyes. See Antiviral having Read all
