I write above all to justify the rating (7) I give to the film. I understand those who gave less, because it's not an easy film. In fact, blacks can be and feel discriminated against here too, but certainly in the USA the issue is much more present and all-pervasive. It's also a very talked about film, which requires a certain amount of attention if you want to grasp all the nuances. The merit, however, is to make fun, in some way, of American hypocrisies and to make it clear that much, too much in daily discussion is now linked to fashion. Reality is much more complex than it appears, and trying to say it in a film, where by definition we act and represent, is not an everyday undertaking. I think this is what led the film to the Oscar it won (not surprisingly) for best "non-original" screenplay. Read all
Sarcastic minorities of  Diego Cineriflessi Diego Cineriflessi
The starting idea of telling the life of a black man who in today's United States neither feels like a minority nor a person who has suffered endless injustices is a good one (it comes from a novel). But the American fiction of the title is not all found there. The novel in which the protagonist concentrates all the misfortunes of the black population, all the suffering and injustices is also fiction. That became his first success after a series of novels that went almost unnoticed. At this point the protagonist gives us the key to the film: the more I do stupid things the more successful I become. So much sarcasm and so much irony tell us how much our society struggles to find a balance between respect for others and discrimination. Sensitivities change over time: they are different from person to person, but there is probably a form of discrimination also in wanting to see and know only the tragedy of African Americans and not the achievement of well-being. Jefferson goes astray when he tries to find alternative directorial solutions that seem impromptu, but he is well supported by the actors. Wright is remarkable, capable of playing a character outside the box, who tries to bend to the mainstream, but is unable to change his true nature. Well done to all the supporting actors too. A film that came to the fore at the Oscars, profoundly American right from the title, but also surprising for us Europeans who will probably have a harder time understanding the protagonist's problems. We are not faced with a masterpiece, but with a work that has good highlights and that can truly be looked at with pleasure or otherwise Read all
Review of  Balkan Castevet Balkan Castevet
American Fiction is a film about the hypocrisy and stereotype of American society, in particular in wanting to label everything especially based on the ethnicity of origin. The story centers on the character of Theolonious, a professor and writer, who has family problems, he is successful at work and here the film immediately shows how a girl leaves her lesson because she is annoyed by the non-censorship made by the professor at N world regarding a historical novel. In fact, the protagonist, nicknamed Monk, is simply an American, a citizen, he doesn't believe in stereotypes, he doesn't believe that based on one's ethnic origin one behaves in a certain way, but in his world, that is, in art this doesn't pay. His books are complex and unsuccessful, in one scene he will go in the library to look for his writings and he will find them in the Afro-American studies section even if his books deal with something else so he will be annoyed by this. As a joke, as a joke, he will write a book under a false name with all the possible stereotypes on African-Americans and the book will be very successful. Jefferson's direction, in the scene, frames Monk who is writing together with two imaginary characters from his book who, in a rather grotesque way, say they are waiting for suggestions from Monk and the writer himself imagine cliché words for the characters to say. The whole thing is a criticism of the society that expects a certain type of target, language from an African-American. Jefferson contrasts the artistic life which will increasingly become a farce with the problems of life reality of Monk, the difficult family situation, the difficulty in establishing a relationship. In the film, almost as if in contrast to Monk, the writer Sintara Golden is present, the latter also has African-American origins and writes about the slums of society; in one scene the protagonist at a writer's convention Read all
