Review of  Ignazio Venzano Ignazio Venzano
Female-centric films, starting from the director, the Indian Payal Kapadia, and the plot, which essentially concerns two/three women in India. The film won the grand jury prize at the Cannes film festival this year. What is interesting is not the plot itself, which presents nothing shocking, but the extraordinary human portrait of the protagonists, all nurses: Prabha is married but to a man who left shortly after the wedding, who lives in Germany and with whom she no longer has contact for a long time. The younger colleague Anu is in love with a Muslim, she who belongs to a Hindu family, with all the problems of the case. The two main protagonists live in Mumbai, linked by their destiny. They have opposite attitudes, one is resigned, the other is more combative. The former is also strongly involved in educational and social initiatives, the latter overcomes the boundaries of the two different religions in an intimate encounter with the beloved. But both ultimately remain within the social and cultural limits of the environment and the people with whom they live: despite living in an enormous and infinitely complex city, they do not escape tradition. Even the setting, in the rainy monsoon season, gives the idea of a reality from which it is difficult, if not impossible, to escape. A turning point will be favored by a third woman, who appears at a certain point: she is the older Parvati, also a nurse, evicted from the house where she has lived all her life. Leaving Mumbai and his job, he returns to his hometown, where his life will change. The film was carefully crafted, in the scenography as well as in the musical accompaniment. It deserves attention. A look at Mumbai of  Diego Cineriflessi Diego Cineriflessi
Director Kapadiya comes from the documentary and to be honest it shows. His transition to fiction still presents several analogies with the realism of that genre and unfortunately brings with it the strengths and weaknesses of the documentary to this fiction film as well. Kapadiya has a keen eye, which knows how to insinuate herself into the complex Indian society and her job is to focus on the individual reality more and more. It starts with a long shot on the coasts of the city of Mumbai where the poorest sections of society tend to gather together to survive. Then among the wards of a hospital and in the life of a poor condominium it follows the lives of some characters who try to survive the chaos of the metropolis until they escape to the rural coast where they will finally be able to find themselves and their place in the world and in love . Very dry form for a not too original story of the company. The stylistic choice is original but it gives very little to the show and in the almost two hours of duration it becomes heavy. The camera investigates the characters from unusual angles and the director's gaze passes through different angles than usual. It's a shame that in the end religious differences and conflicted love have already been seen too many times. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, it is a profoundly feminine film in the composition of the cast and in the plot, but it seems to lack those emotions that can involve the viewer. The part of the woman who has no news from her husband who emigrated to Germany years ago is newer, but more is expected from Cannes. Read all
