The film has potentially interesting concepts such as showing us a Poirot, effectively "dead", without his cases i.e. without corpses, while he is alive when he investigates the murders. The problem is that the initial phase of the withdrawn Poirot lasts very little and in fact this concept is handled more through dialogue than what is shown. Going full on the film, Branangh aims to make Poirot lose the certainties, embroiled in the supernatural; to do this Branagh uses a lot of wide angle to recreate an unreal effect completely seasoned with crooked shots differentiating the various camera points a lot; the concept is also that of framing the key objects in always "bizarre" ways, often almost becoming subjective. The result, however, is of an overly artificial direction, Branagh does not seem to have the right familiarity with horror, he is unable to lengthen the duration of the shots when needed and except for a few shots, it doesn't even have the right visual power or in any case the eye to create sequences of tension. So every time, very many times, you go to wide angle it seems to be Branagh's only weapon to recreate the tension but this turns out to be too fictitious an expedient. Potentially it is the different shots from top to bottom as if to suggest that the whole story is guided by a superior presence and undoubtedly I also take some very successful shots. Even the atmosphere initial with a gray Venice and the arrival at the ancient palace among gondolas, mists and tabards are remarkable, however then the development of the mystery itself, as in Murder on the Nile, makes the mistake of showing some characters as "good" and in fact it lacks that feeling of everyone being a suspect and everyone with not only a potential motive but also as "questionable" characters.
