That planned sacrifice with an unexpected twist

The latest work by Jaume Balagueró, known for the various Rec, Fragile, etc., is inspired by Lovecraft's story "The Haunted House", and offers us a pleasant and well-paced story. After an action interlude, Balagueró returns to his cabalistic and dark origins, crafting a good horror film which, despite being poorer in means than films like the gothic Fragile, manages to capture attention and fascinate. The beginning does not immediately reveal where it will end, but it won't take long to discover where the origin of evil lies.

The protagonist of the feature film is Lucia (Ester Esposito), a beautiful dancer with a statuesque physique and wrong ambitions, which will lead her to make very wrong choices. What could be less wise than stealing an excessive quantity of ecstasy from the criminals of the disco where she dances wildly every night? The inevitable outcome will be to get caught, and in an attempt to escape, getting a serious wound will be the least questionable.

The girl, scratched and scared, she will seek refuge with her sister Rocio, and it will be in that putrid apartment that the most rotten torment will take shape. Nightmares and visions will disturb the peace already lost with that stupid gamble, while she will find herself trying to understand why Rocio left her alone with her niece.

The superb neighbors will spice it all up, a trio halfway between Rosemary's baby and the witches of Salem. The "very nice" and elderly ladies yearn to complete a mission. Their eyes have fallen on little Alba, and nothing will stop their determination. That supernatural creature venerated by them will be regenerated through sacrifice. Poor Lucia will therefore find herself having to face numerous dangers: on the one hand, the criminals are now after her, on the other, condominium owners on the loose who make the mafiosi appear little more than amateurs.<3 >

A scene that particularly struck me was the about-face by the pseudo boyfriend. For fear of being betrayed, he does it himself, in a squalid and ruthless way. But it didn't impress me that much: in human nature the instinct of survival dawns, and there is no love that matters, if you fear being in danger, you will be willing to be ignoble and ridiculous.<3 >

And so, a frightened and desperate soul comes to perform deeds of which he is not proud. But, one thing is certain: that affection wasn't all that true, and the universe doesn't take long to hand out the bill to settle, darkness in spades, blood and bitter tears. There is no need for an apocalypse upon us, the fear for one's fate appears in every situation, and whether it is esoteric or dangerous, in order to escape death, every being will forget their humanity, and a black aura will envelop them.
