Stomach

(Film, 2019)

Sore stomach, imminent threat

Direction

I'll start immediately by justifying the vote, which is purely motivated by the low budget: I believe that with more funds available, a significantly superior product could have been created. From what I have read, there is talk of just three thousand euros, and I believe that with such a sum, almost a miracle has been achieved. There are defects, but there is also the intelligence to make the best use of the cast, avoiding overly high performances or excessive dialogue, and exploiting the  strengths of a fairly simple subject. Most will not miss the style of director Alex Visani, who appears strongly inspired by 80s cinema, and who also wrote the screenplay of this independent, ultra gore, violent and brutal film, a harsh, angry, at times deadly body horror. Despite his lack of money, he boasts disembowelments, skulls being uncovered, heads severed and smashed, and much more. Every now and then it's nice to find valid exponents in the underground, capable of carrying forward a discussion that is not at all easy in our nation.

Alex, played by Fabio Carlani, is a boy who has lost both parents and lives in an isolated house, and I would even say quite desolate. He has problems at work, he is bullied by colleagues, and because of these, he too will find himself fired. There's no denying it, poor guy, he's definitely a loser. He lives wrapped in his pain, immersed in mental discomfort, which can only hurt. As if that wasn't enough, his belly will be in excruciating, terrifying pain, and he won't get any medical help. A pile of tragedies and no comfort, apart from that of Anna (Ingrid Monacelli), a weak and marginalized girl in whom he can see himself, a friend, even if he would like more.
Alex's stomach will mark his nihilism, loneliness and desperation. And that mental and physical discomfort will flow slowly, until the final, sensational and inevitable explosion.

To sum it up, stomach is a bad, crude film, it's not very subtle, it's ruthless, there's blood, violence, barbarity, artisanal special effects which however are good and they manage to generate a fair amount of disgust. Nice surprise is the monstrous creature, which will prove to be just the right amount of disturbing. The protagonist does well and the actress who plays Anna is also good. Visani's work behind the camera is convincing, the film flows fluidly, pleasantly and captivating.
For lovers of splatter and pure evil, if you don't know this film I recommend you check it out: watch it, you'll like it .
