Horror about demonic possessions treated differently than Conjuring.
The film immediately impresses with excellent attention to staging and photography, the film knows how to be raw and dirty and at the same time knows how to give excellent paintings both day and night, excellent chiaroscuro, cuts of light and very interesting shots of the fences, window grates, characters framed by the windows which give a sense of imprisonment almost of inexorability of the events for the protagonist characters trapped in the dark story.
Excellent plays of color with the reds and greens, blood and mystery, always very present, it is no coincidence that the boy first has an ice cream (with black cherry?) but still red and only in followed by the one with the (green) apple.
It is a film about perpetual violence, the wicked actions of the protagonists spread the possession, it is no coincidence that the killings cause the spread of the demonic entity, violence always causes violence in a continuous vortex.
The whole story is very sinister also because the characters immediately believe in possession, in fact the village has its own folklore.
The direction is very direct, as written we are not on the side by Wan who creates and extends waiting times through mechanisms, here there is a lot of hand-held camera, small long-shot sequences that give action, continuous movements in excited situations, the sequence of the dog and the subsequent reaction of the protagonist.
While in the more "calm" situations the direction demonstrates its ability to create excellent suggestive shots.
There is a lot of gore and violence shown in a film that never appears pompous.
In following the events of the two brothers, the character of Pedro is the undisputed protagonist, the character of Jaime, at times, is left a little behind and in the ending perhaps even more prominence could have been given to certain situations, even if, as written, the direction is very also appreciable because it never becomes pompous but always remains raw.
Undoubtedly among the best horror films of the year.
